Konya (Ikonion)

Name from icon, ancient legend of the image of gorgon’s head with which Perseus vanquished the natives before founding the city.
Occupied since 3,000 BC. Hittite remains. Birthplace of St. Thecla. Destroyed by Arabs several times, Seljuks from 1097 to 1243, name changed in 1134, Ottoman from 1453, last Greeks left 1927. Home of Rumi, the whirling Dervishes
