Kappadocia: Ozkonak


Kirsehir (Mokissos)
from 692 AD, has remains of 9 churches, streets and other buildings
                                                        Ozkonak Underground City


14 km NE of Avanos built on the northern slopes of Mt. Idis
discovered in 1972. 10 floors capable of housing 60,000 for up to 3 months
total depth of 40 m
had small 5 cm long holes for ventilation
there were also small holes above for throwing hot oil onto the enemy
has a water well, a winery and rolling stone doors




Avanos (Avanissos)  Built by Nicephorus Phocas.  Church along the Goreme-Avanos road some 2.5 km from Goreme. The narthex is missing, has tunnel vaults, a high nave and 3 apses. Built 964-965 AD
Gulludere (St. Agathangelus) church along this valley 2 km from the village of Cavusin
Built 6-7th cent. has 2-3 layers of frescoes in the apse. Most likely belongs to iconoclastic period
